The Game of Craps

Craps is a game of chance where players place several different bets.

The goal of craps is to anticipate the combined total of two dice. A winning roll adds up to 7 or 11.

Rolling a sum of 2, 3, or 12 is a loss. If you roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 you get to throw again.

Craps Rules

Now that you have a better idea of what craps is, let’s take a step-by-step look at how craps works.

Craps is played in two phases.

1. Come Out Roll - this is the first part of a craps game

• Players bet on either the Pass Line or the Don’t Pass Line.
• The person rolling the dice (the shooter) aims to roll a total of 7 or 11.
• Bets on the Pass Line win if 7 or 11 is rolled. Bets on the Don’t Pass Line lose if a 7 or 11 is rolled.
• Rolling a 2, 3, or 12 is a loss for those on the Pass Line. Players on the Don’t Pass Line win if a 2 or 3 is rolled and tie if a 12 is rolled. If one of these sums is rolled, the original shooter is replaced.
• If a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is rolled, this number becomes the point number for the game. The shooter now throws again.

2. Point Phase - this phase occurs immediately following a roll that totals 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10

• During this phase, the shooter must roll the point number from the previous roll.
• To win a Pass Line bet, the point number must be rolled before a 7 is rolled.

If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point number, then:

• Bets on the Pass Line lose
• Bets on the Don’t Pass Line win

Craps Betting Types

Craps involves several different betting options. You can place the following types of bets during a craps game: 

Pass Line Bet

• This bet is made on the come-out roll. Essentially, a pass line bet means that you win if the shooter wins and lose if the shooter loses. 
• Bets on the Pass Line win if a 7 or 11 is rolled. 
• Bets on the Pass Line lose if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled (known as “craps”). 
• Bets on the Pass Line win if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is rolled (becoming the point number) and that point number is rolled again before a 7. In the case that a 7 is rolled before the point number, bets on the Pass Line lose. 

Don’t Pass Line Bet 

• This bet is the opposite of a Pass Line bet. 
• Bets on the Don’t Pass Line win if a 2 or 3 is rolled. 
• Bets on the Don’t Pass Line lose if a 7 or 11 is rolled. 
• Bets on the Don’t Pass Line tie if a 12 is rolled. 
• Bets on the Don’t Pass Line win if a point number is established and then a 7 is rolled before the point number. If the point number is rolled first, bets on the Don’t Pass Line lose.

Come Bet

• This bet is similar to a Pass Line bet. However, it is placed after the come out roll.  
• A Come Bet wins if a 7 or 11 is rolled.  
• A Come Bet loses if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled. 
• If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is rolled it becomes the come point. This point must be rolled again before a 7 for the Come Bet to win. 

Don’t Come Bet

• This bet is also placed after the come out roll. It is similar to a Don’t Pass Line Bet. 
• A Don’t Come Bet wins if a 2 or 3 is rolled. 
• A Don’t Come Bet loses if a 7 or 11 is rolled. 
• If a 12 is rolled, the result is a tie. 
• If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is rolled, it becomes the come point. Now, a 7 must be rolled before that come point for the Don’t Come Bet to win. 

Place Bets

• Place bets can be made or removed at any time during the game. 
• A Place Bet involves betting that a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 will be rolled. 

The Field

• A Field Bet means betting that a field number will come up next time the dice are rolled. 
• Field numbers include 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12. 
• Numbers 2 and 12 pay double. 

Proposition Bets

Proposition Bets can be made at any point during the game. This type of bet is based on a single roll. 

There are many different types of Proposition Bets, including:

• The Hardways Bets - betting that the point number will be rolled as a pair. For example, betting on a hard 6 means you’re betting that a pair of 3s will be rolled.
• Horn Bets - betting that a 2, 3, 11, or 12 will be rolled.
• Any Craps Bet (also known as Three Way) - betting that a “craps” number will be rolled. That is a 2, 3 or 12. 
• C and E Bets - betting that the shooter will roll any “craps” number (i.e. 2, 3, or 12) or an 11.
• Any Seven (Big Red) Bet - betting that the shooter rolls a 7.
