Format of the Women's World Cup 2023

The 32 competing countries will be split into eight groups of four teams each (groups A to H) for the group stage phase. During the round, teams in each group will play themselves once, and the top two teams from every group (16 overall) advance to the knockout phase.

To form the first knockout stage (round of 16), winners from one group will play against the next group's runners-up (i.e., group A winners face group B runners-up, etc.).

This round's winners will advance to the quarterfinals. Teams who win their quarterfinal match-ups go to the semifinals.

Semifinal winners head to the World Cup Final; losers will play a "third place" match to determine what team gets the bronze medal.

During the knockout rounds, matches will go to extra time (two 15-minute periods) if there's no clear-cut winner after 90 minutes of regulation time. A penalty shootout determines the winner if the score remains level after extra time.
